Mumbai: Delhi was hit by severe fog on quite a few days in February and its effect was felt on flights operated to and from Mumbai as the on-time performance of airlines fell greatly last month.
Figures released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) show that 67.33% of departures and 34% arrivals operated by airlines out of Mumbai were delayed. Any flight that is operated more than 15 minutes beyond its scheduled time of departure or arrival is termed as a delayed one. Beyond that parameter, the statistics does not track the total minutes, hours by which these flights were delayed. Had that been the case, a more grim picture would have emerged as a number of flights were delayed by over 3-4 hours on days when fog led to closure of runway in Delhi. Fog-related problems in the capital hit flight operations to/from Mumbai as a large number of domestic flights are operated on the Mumbai-Delhi route. When these trunk route flights are delayed, those to other parts of the country too are hit as a dominoe effect goes down the airlines' schedule.
