Five arrested for smuggling gold worth Rs 9 lakh

Trichy: Airport authorities in Trichy on Saturday arrested five men in two different incidents of alleged smuggling of gold worth Rs nine lakh.
Three men, who arrived in a Singapore flight late night, were trying to smuggle gold by rolling them in tissue papers. Upon inquiring, the airport security found that they were from Thanjavur and Karaikudi. The passengers, Aiyappan, Anthoniraj and Chidambaram, said they were given 300 g of gold each in the form of gold biscuits by a person while boarding the aircraft at Singapore. The three passengers did not know the identity of the men who gave them the gold bars. However, they revealed the identity of the people to whom they had to handover the gold. The airport security, after waiting for a while, spotted one of the men, who had come to collect the gold. The man, one Muhammad Salim from Theni was also arrested.
