Kolkata Police plan crackdown on airport cargo thieves

Kolkata: Bidhannagar police are preparing for a crackdown on cargo theft at Kolkata airport, calling it a shame that has tarnished the city's image.
"If needed, we can deploy officers in the apron area. But this menace has to cease," additional deputy commissioner-airport Santosh Nimbalkar said after a meeting with representatives of Airports Authority of India (AAI), airlines, outsourced loading firms, cargo handling agencies and CISF. The meeting was called on the instruction of Bidhannagar police commissioner Rajiv Kumar following a TOI report on the theft in the airport secure zone.
Kolkata airport has long been grappling with pilferage of cargo but of late, there has been an alarming rise in the theft of electronics goods consignments, particularly cellphones, memory chips and pen drives.
