Chennai: It was a busy night for doctors and staff at the emergency medical centre at Chennai airport last week when the Saudi Arabian airlines flight made an emergency landing. A flyer had suffered a cardiac arrest mid-air. Doctors could not save him, but many a times they have been successful.
Doctors of the medical emergency centre at the airport are on their toes most days as the airport is seeing a rise in the number of flights that land with ill passengers. Though Airports Authority of India (AAI) has not done a study, on an average one or two flights land due to medical emergencies every month, said a senior official.
The airport also sees a few unscheduled landings as it is a notified stop for medical and technical emergencies. The airport has a well-equipped emergency medical unit with doctors and nurses posted round the clock.
