Visakhapatnam: With the efforts to delink the city airport from the Indian Navy control gaining momentum, the full-fledged autonomous status is at hand.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, one of the members of the group of minister (GoM), on Thursday, wrote to the defence minister AK Antony urging him to shift INS Dega, the navy's airfield and hand over the entire airport to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
The Congress leader also pointed out that the Centre is examining the viability of expanding the existing Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Tirupati airports to international standards and said that the issue of having a full-fledged international airport in the Port City has been under discussion. Visakhapatnam airport cannot be made into an international airport without the cooperation of the Indian Navy, said Jairam Ramesh, the Union minister for rural development.
