Two arrested with gold worth Rs 19 lakh

Ahmedabad: The customs department on Saturday held two men for smuggling gold worth Rs 19.23 lakh at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Ahmedabad-based Mirza Imran Abbasbeg, 28, and Irfan Khan Pathan, 50, were caught with 665 grams of gold concealed in electronic appliances.
According to officials, Abbasbeg is a first-time carrier while Pathan had come to pick up Abbasbeg at the airport. This is the third such incident of gold smuggling in this month and 20th in last three months.
Abbasbeg arrived from Dubai in Emirates flight EK-538 at 2.50am. Acting on a tip-off, customs officials detained Abbasbeg and questioned him. "Abbasbeg had concealed gold weighing 407.8 grams in a popcorn-maker in the form of wire and 15 gold bars weighing 257.6 grams were concealed in a set-top box," said a customs official.
The official said Abbasbeg chose to fly into the country through Ahmedabad, thinking that it would be easier to pass through the security here than at Mumbai or Chennai. "Pathan had come to pick up Abbasbeg so he also was detained for questioning," he said. The two were produced in the metropolitan court on Saturday.
