Coimbatore: Customs officials seized 600 grams gold from a passenger at the Coimbatore International Airport on Sunday.
Rukhman Ameedu (30) of Tiruchy, who arrived at the airport by an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah was arrested for smuggling gold. Six gold bars, each weighing 100 gm, were concealed in his rectum. Minu Pramod, Additional Commissioner of Customs said the seized gold was worth `18 lakh.
After customs officials grew suspicious, Ameedu was taken to a nearby hospital, where an X-ray image was taken. This confirmed that Ameedu had concealed the metal in his rectum. The passenger was remanded to judicial custody.
