Airline staff held for gold smuggling in Bangalore

Chennai: A gold smuggling racket, in which Sri Lankan Airlines staff were involved, was busted at Bangalore airport by sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence from Chennai early on Saturday. The manager of Sri Lankan Airlines, a security personnel of the airlines and a passenger were taken into custody after being found smuggling gold by hiding it under a passenger seat of a flight from Colombo.
A DRI official said those in custody had revealed that smuggling was being carried out with help from the airline's staff in Sri Lanka. "Even if the seizure was just 2kg of gold, the role of airline officials makes it sensitive," he said.
Despite repeated attempts, no official from Sri Lankan airlines was available for comment.
The seizure was carried out on the basis of a tip-off.
