Bullet found in baggage, SP’s Bijnor LS candidate held at IGIA

New Delhi: Samajwadi Party Lok Sabha candidate from Bijnor, Shahnawaz Rana, was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday evening for carrying a bullet in his hand baggage. He was released on bail thereafter.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGIA) MI Haider said, “Rana was arrested after he was found to be in possession of a bullet in his baggage. He disclosed that he had an arms licence valid in UP, but since he did not have permission to carry any bullet or weapon, he was arrested and released on bail. He has been booked for violating licence conditions and Sections of the Arms Act.”
Rana was reportedly travelling from Delhi to Dubai by a Jet Airways flight. The CISF staff, during baggage screening, noticed the bullet and detained him.
“His bag was opened for a physical check by security personnel after they noticed something suspicious during screening. A bullet of .38 bore revolver was recovered. He was handed over to police after that,” an airport official said.
The official said Rana claimed that he was unaware of the presence of a bullet in his bag.
Rana is a resident of Muzaffarnagar, UP. Officials said he was arrested since he was unable to produce any documents to support his possession of the bullet.
