Glass panel crashes again at Chennai airport domestic terminal

Chennai: A large glass panel fell from the facade of the new domestic terminal of Chennai airport on Sunday. Nobody was injured in the accident which happened near the departure gate number one at 9am.
The panel, sized 1.5metre by 2.8metre, is part of the glass wall on the first floor departure hall. It fell to the ground floor of the building and has left a gaping hole in the structure. The arrival gate on the ground floor where it fell was closed and there was no one near it when the accident happened.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) engineers fixed an aluminium sheet by evening to cover the hole in the wall. "We have cordoned off the area where the shards fell on the ground floor and on the first floor before taking up repairs. The effect of airconditioning effect has become weak because of the hole," said an official.
Glass panels have shattered and crashed at the airport several times after the building was opened to passengers early last year. The AAI and the ministry of civil aviation are yet to fix responsibility for the structural defects.
