HC stays Akola airport expansion

Nagpur: The high court here on Wednesday ordered status quo on proposed expansion plans for Shivni airport in Akola after Vidarbha Association for Research Technology and Development in Agricultural and Rural Sector (VART-DARS) filed a PIL through its president Balwant Bhatkal.
A division bench of Justices Bhushan Gavai and CV Bhadang gave the order in respect of possession and the status of the land of Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV) while issuing notices to respondents.
According to counsel for petitioners Firdos Mirza and Tejas Deshpande, PDKV's executive council had resolved that it had difficulties in transferring land for the airport expansion in its meeting on January 22 last year. They cited TOI report of August 31 last year that PDKV would lose its important infrastructure and projects if the land were taken away.
The university wrote to the collector too that depriving it of said land would have adverse effect on important research projects.
