Mumbai: Immigration counters at T2 of Mumbai airport witnessed chaos and rush on Friday night after servers developed a snag. The problem was compounded by the fact that the authorities have been facing a persistent staff shortage and of the 132 immigration counters, only 50 are manned during peak hours in an airport that handles a daily footfall of nearly 20,000.
The immigration check process was delayed for hours together as passengers and crew members formed long queues.
While nearly 20 flights reported delays between midnight and 6.30 am, Air China was the worst hit, with its Mumbai to Chengdu flight reporting a twoand-a-half hour delay.
Japan Airlines' flight to Bangkok reported a nearly two-hour delay. Other flights that were delayed anywhere between 22 minutes to an hour were Air India to the US, and British Airlines, Iberia and American Airlines, all to London.
"There were unending queues. Passengers were just crowding up by the minute," said Malad resident Manish Kulkarni (38), who was heading to Dubai.
