A Chinese military aircraft spotted white floating objects today within the search area in the southern Indian Ocean west of Perth, and pictures were taken to determine if they were debris from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.
The Xinhua news agency quoted Chinese military sources as saying that the Chinese Ilyushin IL-76 plane departed at 6.04am local time this morning and arrived to the search area about 2,700km off the coast of Perth at 9.55am.
The crew spotted the floating objects about 20 minutes from 11.05 local time. Unfavourable weather conditions of high waves and strong winds hampered the hunt of the Chinese plane.
Their findings have been reported to Australia's Joint Agency Coordination Center (JACC) coordinating the operation after the plane returned to Perth at 2.20pm local time.
The search today has mobilised up to 10 military planes, three civil jets and 11 ships for an area of about 217,000 square km, 1,700km northwest of Perth.
Australian ADV Ocean Shield equipped with a American-supplied pinger-locater and British oceanographic vessel HMS Echo continued scouring beneath water along a single 240-km track.
Xinhua also reported that a Chinese vessel has detected a pulse signal with a frequency of 37.5kHz in the southern Indian Ocean but there has been no confirmation as to the identity of the source of the signal.
