Yusuf Nepali of 1999 Hijack Case Released from Prison

Patiala: Bhupal Man Damai alias Yusuf Nepali, who had been imprisoned over his connection with the Indian Airlines Flight IC-184 to Kandahar hijack in December 1999 has been released from jail following his exoneration by a court.
54-year old Nepali was released at about 6.30 PM today from the Patiala Central Jail with a stamp on his wrist that enables him to travel free by train till Gorakphur en route to his native place in Nepal.
Nepali, speaking to reporters soon after his release, said that he had not  been involved in the hijacking.
The High Court of Punjab and Haryana had exonerated him in February, along with Dilip Kumar Bhujel, another accused of murder, hijack and other offences on grounds that had the CBI had failed in proving the active participation of the two in the plot to capture the plane.
Thought the High Court had exonerated Nepali and Bhujel, they were both held guilty under Section 25 of the Arms Act. Also, a fine of Rs.3,000 was levied from Nepali by the court.
Nepali, however, who has claimed that he is from a very poor family background, was unable to pay the fine. Following this, inmates of the Patiala Central Jail had pooled in the money to repay the fine.
