Man caught with 6 gold bars in Goa airport

Panaji:  In yet another instance of gold smuggling at the international airport at Dabolim, a passenger from Mumbai carrying nearly a kilogram of gold was nabbed by customs officers on Thursday. Six bars of gold, weighing 949g in all and valued at 24,10,238 were recovered from the passenger, who had arrived on the domestic leg of an international flight from Dubai.
The 23-year-old man, Fakhruddin Maniyar, had concealed two gold bars, wrapped in condoms, inside his rectum, and the four others were hidden in his shoes. As he attempted to pass through customs' green channel, officers intercepted him because of his "odd walking style".
"The youth is a native of Mumbai and was a domestic passenger.
It is most likely that the gold was passed on to him on board the flight, by an international passenger arriving from Dubai. This has become a common modus operandi, wherein international passengers, who may themselves be couriers, pass on the contraband to domestic passengers as they do not have to go through customs," explained an officer .
