MERS Scare: CIAL Lacks Proper Monitoring System

Kochi: The Health Department is of the view that they are geared to face any challenge rising out of detection of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) cases, but the Cochin International Airport still does not have an efficient monitoring system to screen such cases.
CIAL officials said that other than giving an instructions that passengers showing symptoms such as fever, sore throat are to be reported, no steps have been initiated in this direction.
One of the private hospitals in the city has informed the health department of a suspected MERS case. “The team from the DMO office went to the private hospital to collect the swab of a 75 year old woman who has just returned from Saudi Arabia,” said an official with the Health department, on condition of anonymity.
When ‘City Express’ contacted public health cell of the DMO office to know any suspected MERS case been reported, the official with the public health cell denied it.
