Airport Compound Wall: Locals Protest 'Encroachment'

Bhubaneswar: The residents of Bhimpur area are up in arms against the Biju Patnaik Airport authorities for constructing its compound wall by allegedly encroaching upon a 30 feet public access road meant for the locality.

Though the Orissa High Court had recently directed the airport authorities to consider the grievance of the locals in this regard within three months, the contractor entrusted with the work has gone ahead with the construction activity, the locals said in a petition to the Minister of Tourism and Culture Ashok Panda.

Construction of the compound wall is arbitrary, forceful and violative of the State Government plan, they added. In August 2006, the General Administration Department had alienated 1.506 acre revenue land to the Airport Authority of India. In lieu of that, the AAI was asked to surrender an equal patch of land on which a 30 feet public road would be constructed.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently began the work and 12-ft wide black-topped road was constructed while leaving the airport side of it vacant. The AAI, the petition said, is allegedly being encroached upon for construction of the boundary wall.
