Airport staffer among 3 held for smuggling gold bars

The Mumbai Airport Customs seized nine gold bars and iridium powder used to increase the weight of gold, in separate incidents, on Friday. The total value of the seized items was over Rs1.17 crore and two passengers and an airport staffer were arrested in this regard.

In the first incident, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) team of Mumbai customs seized five gold bars of 100 grams each. A passenger, Mohsin Naseem Khan, had concealed the bars in a concealed pocket in his pants. He landed at the airport by a Singapore Airlines flight at 9.30 pm.

In the second instance, a person dumped four gold bars, valued at Rs 99 lakh, in a dustbin of the T2 arrivals hall. A Livewel Aviation Services employee, Sudeep S P, picked it up and was on his way out of the airport when he was caught. "As per their plan, Sudeep was to hand the gold over to the same person outside the airport for a commission in return," an AIU official said.
