DGCA slams AAI for shoddy upkeep of Juhu airport’s second runway

Mumbai: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has asked the Airports Authority of India to repair Juhu airport's secondary runway at the earliest or lose its licence.

Juhu airport is used largely by helicopters and small fixed wing aircraft and its secondary runway 16/34 handles 40 per cent of the load. The runway has been caught in acontroversy for two years after the AAI declared it non-operational in May 2011.

The AAI then issued no-objection certificates to over 150 high-rises around the airport, leading to allegations that it is setting up the release of 400 acres of prime property in Juhu to be exploited by developers.

The DGCA's strongly worded warning comes as another blow to the AAI, whose officers are already under the CBI scanner for the manner in which they declared the runway non-operational.
