Thiruvananthapuram: The Air Customs officials of the international airport here on Sunday foiled an attempt to smuggle gold bars weighing over one kilogram concealed in a microwave oven.
Officials said Mohammed Rizvan, a 21-year-old youth hailing from Kozhikode, was arrested in connection with the incident. He had arrived on an Air India flight from Sharjah. The three gold bars were hidden between the components of the microwave oven. “Two bars weighed around 500 gm each and the other 100 gm. They were kept as to look like the instrument’s components,” the officials said. The seizure followed a tip-off and the Customs team was led by assistant commissioner Sanjay Bangartale effected the s'eizure.
