Gold worth Rs 34 lakh seized at Dabolim

Panaji: Customs sleuths at the Dabolim international airport seized gold bars valued at around Rs 34 lakh from three men arriving on a Dubai flight on Saturday.
The men, natives of Kerala, had concealed the smuggled gold in their rectums. Officials retrieved a total of 12 gold bars, each weighing one tola, or 10 grams, from the passengers.
The three were identified as Ukkash, Naushad and Midhun, all in their early 30's. They were passengers on Air India's early morning flight from Dubai to Goa via Mumbai.
"They followed the modus operandi that has become quite common at Dabolim airport. One man was an international passenger who had purchased gold in Dubai. When the flight halted at Mumbai, the two others boarded and the gold was handed over to these 'domestic passengers', who quickly packed the gold bars and concealed them in their rectums," explained a customs official.
