'HAL airport must open up for short-haul flights'

Bangalore: The talk of re-opening the HAL airport in Bangalore for short-haul passenger flights has gained momentum with the defence PSU stepping up pressure on the new regime.

The HAL and other stakeholders, however, seem to think that a solution is possible only if they involve the private airport operator - the GVK Group-led consortium - in any sort of deal.

Former civil aviation secretary KNShrivastava believes that the only possible way to resume operations at HAL is to get the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), HAL and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) into a tripartite agreement on revenue sharing.

"It is clear from the traffic trends that civil aviation has lost substantial short-haul traffic from Bangalore to rail and road sectors. The only way to win it back is by re-opening the HAL airport for short-haul passenger traffic," said Shrivastava, who is currently a member of the Prime Minister chaired National Disaster Management Authority.
