High Court directs airlines to file composite chart of airfares

Jammu: A Division Bench of Jammu and Kashmir High Court today directed airlines to issue composite chart of airfares being charged by them while operating on various routes in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Bench was hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by Chamber of Commerce and Industries Jammu against the problems being faced by the common public due to exorbitant airfares charged by the different airlines without having any upper limit.
The bench comprising Justice Virender Singh and Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur after hearing the counsel for the petitioners directed KK Pangotra, Assistant Solicitor General of India to provide composite chart on fare charges of different Airlines (for each flight) operating from Jammu to different sectors and also directed to file affidavit on behalf of Director General of Civil Aviation of India.
While the GoAir Airlines sought time to file reply, the Bench took serious note of the absence of any representative from Indigo Airlines and Spicejet Airlines as  nobody from their side  appeared for hearing.
Pertinently, steep hike in airfares has raised serious concern in Kashmir’s tourism industry, with stakeholders accusing the airliners of “deliberately” trying to make Kashmir “the costliest and least preferred destination,” to cut out tourist inflow.
According to stakeholders this has now become a pattern with the airliners that at the inception of every tourism season in Kashmir “they unilaterally and arbitrarily increase the fares on this sector making Kashmir packages unaffordable.”
