How Mumbai keeps birds away from airport, tracks

Mumbai's winged residents have caused two major travel disruptions this month, halting a metro train for 30 minutes on June 14 and forcing two aircraft to abort landing on Monday.

While passengers and commuters grumble about such disruptions, airport and railway officials say they take a host of measures to prevent birds from blundering into planes' paths or from tripping overhead power lines.

Mumbai airport has a team of 38 'bird scarers' who, in shifts, keep a watch near the runway round the clock. The personnel are armed with laser torches, firecrackers and six-shot launchers that produce a loud, whistling sound to keep birds away from the airport's operational area.

Central Railway has spent Rs 91 lakh to buy non-toxic, bird repellent gel to keep the creatures off overhead cables that power trains. Western Railway has made a provision of Rs 46 lakh for a similar gel.
