More international flyers but airport has few facilities

Chennai: Despite a dip in air passenger growth, Chennai airport continues to handle more international passengers annually than Bangalore and Hyderabad. However, facilities for international travellers remain abysmal, due to the indifference of Airports Authority of India.

Chennai, a port city, has better international connectivity but AAI has frittered away the advantage. The airport handled 45,37,677 international passengers in 2013-14, an increase of 1.7% over last year. But AAI still gives shoddy treatment to flyers and airlines.

Passengers walking out of a run-down old terminal are greeted by unswept corridors and people receiving friends or relatives find flight information display boards blank. Things are no better for people flying out of the city. Most check in at the new terminal but board flights from the old terminal.
