Passengers take off with pungent smell at Srinagar Airport

Srinagar: Accusing Srinagar Municipal Corporation of turning Srinagar Airport into a “garbage dumping site,” officials at the airport said heaps of garbage lying at this busy place makes passengers and officials vulnerable to many diseases.
“SMC has failed to clear garbage accumulated at Srinagar International airport for the past month. This is become nuisance for all of us. We have to face embarrassment at the hand of passengers and officials,” a senior airport official said.
“They have literally turned the airport into a garbage dumping site,” he said. “Till the airport authority took care of the garbage itself, we had no issues as everything was cleared on a regular basis. However, since November last, SMC came into picture and everything started getting worse. Now their men don’t turn up to clear the garbage.”
Another official said: “Few garbage dumpers were installed last year at few places where in the municipal authorities dumped the garbage collected from various places but they remain unattended.”
They said the authorities don’t empty the dumpers even for days together at the dumping sites.
Officials said the garbage emanated foul smell and makes the movement of the passengers and officials difficult.
“The municipal authorities have not bothered to even send their men and machinery despite knowing the importance of this place,” they said.
