Pune: Customs officials detained two persons at the Pune airport on May 25 and 29 respectively, for smuggling gold worth Rs 30 lakh using a new modus operandi — converting gold into foil and then concealing it inside cardboard boxes.
The two accused have been identified as Iqbal Mohammad Kunni and Abdul Majid, both residents of Kasargod in Kerala. Both arrived in the city from Sharjiah on the same Air India flight — IX-214 — on the respective dates. A Customs officer said, "Concealing gold foil inside a cardboard box is a new method of smuggling the yellow metal into the country.
This is the first time that we have come across such a modus operandi." Another Customs official said that the accused allegedly work as carriers for syndicates in Mumbai and Kerala.
