Rs 40 lakh seized from 2 men at airport

Chennai: Two people who tried to smuggle Rs 40 lakh to Kuala Lumpur were nabbed at the airport on Tuesday. Officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence said the men were smuggling the money to pay salaries of Indian workers.

A DRI official said the seizure was based on a tip they received on Monday evening. "The money was concealed in the check-in baggage. We are searching for one more person," he said. The seized notes were in the denominations of 500 and 1,000. "The men were intercepted at the departure terminal while they were waiting to board a flight to Kuala Lumpur," said the official.

Officials said the money was being smuggled for distribution among job agents who employed Indian workers. "Many who work as electricians, plumbers and maids are paid in Indian currency as the value difference between rupee and ringgit benefits job agents," said an official.
