New Delhi: In a move that raises question over safety of Indian air navigation, the Airports Authority Officers' Association (India) has complained about the quality of radar and other air traffic control systems at Indian airports.
The association, a union of communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) officers who are responsible for upkeep of all air traffic control equipment, has told the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), their parent organization) that radars procured and installed at Indian airports two years back are experiencing problems.
"The Kochi airport experienced a problem with its radar that used to vibrate while rotating. The antennae unit along with the pedestal had to be replaced ... A fire broke out in Chennai due to a faulty UPS and the damaged radar is being replaced by getting a radar from Amritsar and now Amritsar needs a new radar... In Delhi, ELDIS (company which supplied all this equipment) radar antenna has malfunction in hardware and software," a recent letter written by association general secretary Y P Gautam to DGCA and AAI says.
