Mumbai: The Indian Army has raised security concerns with the state government regarding high rises near the Mumbai airport. General Officer Commanding for Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa areas, Lt General P R Shankar and his team met state chief secretary JS Saharia on Thursday. The meet was attended by the Indian Air Force and Navy officials as well.
Sources said Shankar and his team talked about the high rises that have come up near the army establishment in Kalina, which directly overlooked the air defence unit meant for the Santacruz airport. The air defence units protect the airport during wars and emergencies.
"A terrorist with one old handheld explosive launcher can fire at a plane from these high rises," said a senior army officer.
The Army also has concerns about the slum rehabilitation schemes coming up near the airport.
