Bangalore: South India could see an airport slugfest, as four metro airports in the region fight for supremacy and the status of being the gateway to the South.
BIAL, which operates the Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (KIAB), has just announced a spate of concessions to airlines that fly during non-peak hours, and those that make KIAB their main operating base.
Those flying during nonpeaks hours -between 11 am and 5 pm -and those that connect the country's IT capital to newer destinations will receive concessions between 25% and 100% on landing and parking charges.
There are even bigger concessions under BIAL's `Home Carrier' concept, designed to encourage airlines to make Bangalore airport their main operating base. Regional airline Air Costa and India's newest domestic carrier AirAsia India are said to be reviewing this incentive, which requires an airline to add new passenger capacity of one million every year.
