Indore airport's international dream still a far cry

Indore: International status to Indore airport still remains a distant dream. So far, none of the airlines have evinced interest in operating flights from Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport despite a feeler from the ministry for civil aviation to grant the much-awaited status.

Airport director RN Shinde said it is a lengthy process to get an international airport status. Also, no proposals from airlines have come up to fly international flights from Indore. "Apart from good occupancy, it is mandatory for airlines to fly abroad from Indore to get the status, which has not been happening," said Shinde.

On Monday, minister of state (civil aviation) GM Siddeshwara said they are thinking of granting international status to Bhopal, Indore, and Raipur airports. "Three months ago, Government of India, issued a notification regarding its willingness to grant the much-awaited status to Bhopal, Indore and Raipur airports. But, none of the airlines is ready to operate from Indore although basic facilities including runway, night landing, and international class terminal are available."
