Kannur airport runway extension details in 2 weeks

Kannur: Rehabilitation of eleven families, who were once evicted and provided compensation for their land acquired for the Kannur airport project, will be the major challenge authorities will face while increasing the runway's length.

Chief minister Oommen Chandy had on Saturday said the runway would be increased to 3,400 metres from the initially planned 3,050 metres to allow bigger aircraft to operate from the upcoming airport.

The runway was brought down to 3,050 metres earlier to avoid further eviction of families rehabilitated, as it was a costlier process that would also invite huge resistance.

Kannur International Airport authorities said the finer details of the extension plan would now be worked out within two weeks.
