New Delhi : The much drummed up modernisation of Mumbai’s Chhattrapati Shivaji International (CSI) Airport will not help much as it will be oversaturated in handling passenger traffic by the next year because of faulty design, says one of the 11 Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports tabled in Parliament on Friday.
Its maximum capacity after expansion is 40 million passengers per annum (mppa) while that much will be the traffic by 2015 itself, rising to 80 mppa by 2026.
“Thus even after modernisation and upgradation of CSI Airport, Mumbai, the airport would be unable to meet the demand of passengers. The problem is expected to be compounded with the delay in development of the second airport at Navi Mumbai,” says the CAG report.
It points out a “design constraint” limiting the capacity handling of the runways since two runways at the airport 09/27 and 14/32 intersect at their mid points preventing simultaneous operation of both runways.
