47 Airports in the Red: AAI Report

New Delhi: The Ministry of Civil Aviation(MoCA) is in the process of reviving the sagging fortunes of at least 47 airports across the country that have run up huge losses in the last three years. These include the airports at Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Bhubaneshwar, Amritsar, Jaipur, Bagdogra and  Bangalore old airport.

According to the data of the Airport Authority of India (AAI), Jaipur Airport had incurred a loss of `72.30 crore in 2012-13, Amritsar Airport `61.13 crore while Bangalore Airport suffered a `44.25 crore loss during the same period. In 2011-12, Bangalore Airport had incurred a loss of `48.67 crore.  In June, MoCA had identified 24 airports for the development of domestic air cargo terminals to increase revenue. Some of the loss-making airports are non-operational and the government is planning to start flying schools at these airports.
