AI pilots, management lock horns over flight delays

New Delhi: There's serious discontent brewing among Air India pilots. The union of erstwhile Indian Airlines pilots has alleged that its members are being "kept out of roster" (not being assigned flights) for pointing out alleged violation of safety procedures.

"Pilots are being kept of roster for writing snags and pointing out short comings of the concerned department or individual regarding violation of civil aviation requirement and safety procedures... A pilot was pulled up for not accepting an aircraft with outdated documents.... we urge you not to stress our pilots with unnecessary responsibilities of documentation and penalize them for ensuring the safety of the flight and our esteemed passengers," Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) general secretary Captain T Praven Kerthi wrote to the airline management last week.

A senior AI official, however, dismissed these allegations. "We acted against some pilots who unnecessarily delay flights. This letter is a fallout of that move to improve on time performance (OTP). There is no question of violating or overlooking safety. We take pride in ensuring the highest safety standards," the official said.
