New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh is the new focus area for the civil aviation ministry which, with a politician from the state heading it, has set the wheels in motion to develop three international airports in the state, including one to be built from scratch.
While the plans are to upgrade the existing airports at Tirupati and Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam will get a new one, as the current airport in the port city on the eastern coast is a navy facility that is being operated as a civil enclave.
Civil aviation ministry officials visited the state last week to monitor airport development at these places. They also met officials from the state government.
"The work at the terminal building in Tirupati will be expedited and completed in nine months. A second runway will also be built here," said a senior civil aviation ministry official.
