Ahmedabad: Bird hits may have gone down at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel international airport but the threat continues to haunt passengers and the airport authority alike. And there are reasons for their concern too. The Airport Environment Management Committee (AEMC) which was constituted to charter a way out of this problem has not met for over four months.
The palpability of the problem was aptly highlighted on Saturday when a bird hit forced an Indigo flight to make an emergency landing. Two blades of the rotor of the left wing of the aircraft were damaged when the Mumbai-bound flight was hit by a bird.
Though this was the first major incident of the year. Sources said, there were some other minor incidents of bird-hit where the flight had not been disrupted.
The AEMC was constituted under the chairmanship of principal secretary of forest & environment department of government of Gujarat. Other members of the committee are - commissioner of AMC, collector and members from Army, Air force and GEER Foundation. "The committee has met once earlier this year, but the next scheduled meeting is now long overdue," said sources in the committee.
