Gold smuggling with new modus operandi seized by customs at Mumbai airport

Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Customs seized gold in four unique cases of gold smuggling on Monday night. Three of the four passengers, with Indian passports, were intercepted from the same flight. Anwar Basha Mohammed Kassim, an Indian national arrived by Singapore Airlines flight number SQ-424 from Singapore, was intercepted and resulted in the recovery of four strips of gold weighing four kilogram and valued at Rs 1,04,15,540. These four gold strips were recovered inside two LED TV's, making it the first ever case with a new modus operandi. These gold strips were cleverly concealed inside the cabinet, pasted on either side of the TV display picture tube. In the second case, Haresh Nanikram Chandwani, another Indian national who arrived by the same flight, was intercepted and resulted in the recovery of three cut pieces of gold weighing at 594 grams and valued at Rs 15,46,708.
