Chennai: Passengers arriving or departing from Chennai airport may no longer have to suffer stinking toilets and dirty carpets. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is expected to identify and appoint a professional firm next month to maintain the steel and glass domestic and international terminals.
The decision to give a cleaning contract was taken after the ministry of civil aviation was flooded with complaints from passengers, politicians and trade bodies about poor upkeep and ministry officials inspected the airport unannounced to verify them.
The firm selected will clean glass, carpets, ceilings, roof truss and other structures in the terminal buildings with specially designed machinery used at airports the world over. A team of trained workers will be allotted to each cleaning module and the frequency of cleaning monitored through checks and cross-checks.
