Hyderabad: Turbo Megha Airways, which is backed by Telugu superstar Ram Charan Tej, is in talks with Brazilian aerospace company Embraer and French-Italian aircraft manufacturer ATR to firm up lease plans for at least three aircraft.
The Hyderabad-based regional airline was among the six to receive approval from the civil aviation ministry last month. Promoted by Vankayalapati Umesh, a 45-year-old aviation engineer with interests in ground handling business, Turbo Megha plans to confine its airline operations to initially limit operations in the south.
"Turboprop aircraft are better suited for short haul operations," said Umesh, managing director of Turbo Megha, who pointed out that currently no one in the Indian aviation sector is using ERJ-145 aircraft, a 50-seater plane from Embraer.
This is the second regional player to come out of Hyderabad at a time when airlines are going through a particularly difficult phase. Air Costa, which commenced operations in October last year with two aircraft, sealed a mega pact with aircraft manufacturer Embraer in February to buy 50 jets in phases at $2.94 billion (Rs 18,000 crore).
