Amid Odds, Domestic Air Traffic Up 6%

Bangalore: Domestic air traffic in India rose by 6 per cent in July 2014 vis-a-vis July 2013. The good news could get better for loss making airlines here as the upcoming Diwali season offers have already started with many carriers offering low cost travel in their domestic routes.

“July was another strong month of growth for air travel. People are connecting by air in ever greater numbers. That’s true across all regions. Despite the various economic challenges, the outlook for passenger travel remains broadly positive,” Tony Tyler, CEO and Director General of global airline operators body International Air Transport Association (IATA) reportedly said.

Indian carriers, barring a couple, have registered mounting losses in recent times. According to civil aviation analyst firm Centre for Aviation (CAPA), the estimated losses for Indian carriers (combined) could be in the range of $1.4 billion in 2014-15.  This outlook is lower than $1.7 billion of losses by Indian airline operators in 2013-14 as estimated by CAPA.
