ANA Holdings Inc., the only Japanese airline that operates freighters, plans to add cargo routes to India to tap South Asian demand for car parts and electronic components.
The carrier plans to add two Boeing Co. 767 freighters to its fleet of 12 aircraft by March 2017 to accommodate the expanded service, Akira Okada, the president of ANA Cargo Inc. said in a Sept. 10 interview. Rather than round-trip flights, the Tokyo-based company is considering triangular routes to better capture demand between regions along the way.
The announcement comes less than two weeks after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed a visit to Japan in which he sought to expand trade ties between Asia’s second- and third-largest economies. ANA Cargo is expanding operations after ANA Holdings, Japan’s biggest passenger airline by volume and sales, spun off the freight-and-logistics business as a wholly owned unit in April.
