Cops plan e-database of IGI staff

New Delhi: With the sharp rise in theft cases and bolder crimes being reIGI airport, the baggage loaders at IGI, considered a minor nuisance till now, are turning into a security issue reported from IGI airport, the baggage loaders at IGI, considered a minor nuisance till now, are turning into a security issue. This month, a Russian embassy official's cellphone was found with a loader; late last month, a loader was found to have picked the wallets and bags of three staff trainees from an airline counter.

Delhi Police has started making a list of everyone working at the airport. This is the first time an electronic database of all employees and contractors is being created after the airport terminals were refurbished and T3 was inaugurated four years ago. The compilation will make it easy to track employees and keep a watch over their movements at the airport. Police said the exercise is also needed to counter terror-the attack at Karachi airport in June acting as a warning sign.

"Few airlines have their own baggage loading department at the airport. In most cases this work has been outsourced to third parties, several of whom have further farmed out the work to smaller contractors. We have very little information on the workers on the ground. These employees work in temporary shifts of a few months and have very little commitment to their work. They can be easily lured to by anti-national elements. We want to bring some accountability in the system by getting a roster of all employees and all agencies at the site," said a senior police officer.
