Customs' new wing cracks down on gold-smuggling flyers

Ahmedabad:  Smuggling of gold has increased four-fold, especially at city airport after June 2013 when the central government imposed restrictions on gold imports. Over 50 people, including women, were detained by the customs department at the airport for smuggling of the precious metal this year alone.

To stop gold smuggling, the customs have constituted for the airport an internal security unit called the 'Air Intelligence Unit' (AIU). This is the first time such a unit has been set at the city airport.

AIU has a deputy commissioner, a superintendent and two inspectors and other officials. They keep watch on suspects right from the time they enter the airport and also in toilets where many passengers go after alighting from long-distance flights. The intelligence team has detected several cases of smuggling in the last few weeks.
