Kochi: The air intelligence unit of the customs at Cochin International Airport Ltd ( Cial) on Tuesday seized 1.4kg gold worth nearly Rs 40 lakh from a passenger who arrived from Mali.
The gold was seized from Kasaragod native Mubil Muhammed (26) on Tuesday night. The gold was brought as a trolley handle. The passenger arrived in a Spice Jet flight from Mali at 5.10pm.
According to customs officials, many of those who were arrested for gold smuggling were from Kasaragod. Though they interrogated Muhammed as he was from Kasaragod, he initially denied carrying any smuggled goods until they recovered gold while examining his trolley bag.
