Gold worth Rs 90 lakh seized from airport washroom

Jaipur: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Saturday seized 3 kg of gold worth nearly Rs 90 lakh from the airport's washroom and arrested a man for hiding the consignment there.

The accused, a youth identified as Sayed Mohammed, is a native of Bangalore, sources said. He allegedly smuggled the gold from Muscat in an Oman Airways flight. The man had travelled abroad nearly 20 times in the last two years.

Sources said that the man smuggled in 9.4 kg gold in his last 11 foreign trips. However, earlier he had passed through Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai airports. It is for the first time that he tried to smuggle gold through Jaipur International Airport and was caught.

The authorities have launched an investigation into the possibility of insiders' involvement because the modus operandi is the same as the one exposed by the DRI last year. In some earlier cases, smugglers hid the gold consignment in the toilet which comes before the customs and immigration counter at the airport.
