No parking space for new flights

Pune: The Lohegaon airport authorities are finding it difficult to cater to the growing demand from various airlines to start new flight services from the city, due to insufficient space for aircraft parking bays.

New airlines like AirAsia and Tata-Singapore Airline have already approached the airport authorities to start flights to domestic and international destinations. But the authorities are citing the inadequate size of the existing apron (space used to park aircraft) for their inability to accommodate these flights. The airport is already handling 62 flights every day.

The airport authorities have now written to Pune MP Anil Shirole, who heads the airport advisory committee, for his help in taking up the issue of securing land to expand the apron with the defence ministry officials in Delhi. "We want to create two additional aircraft parking bays which will enable us handle more flights," a senior airport official told TOI on Monday.
