Pune, Nagpur airports now equipped with Ebola screening facilities

Recently, former journalist and activist Ketan Tirodkar filed a PIL with an allegation that India is not yet fully ready to prevent Ebola spread, as several people coming back from Ebola hit countries are arriving at airports in Pune and Nagpur where Ebola screening facilities are not available. Following that, the Bombay High Court passed an order, directing the Maharashtra Government to arrange proper screening facilities in Pune and Nagpur, similar to those existing at Mumbai and Delhi airport.

The Union Government informed the Bombay High Court September 25 that thermal image scanners have been arranged at Nagpur and Pune airports to facilitate screening of passengers coming from West African countries to detect possible Ebola suspects.

Rui Rodrigues, counsel for the Central Government, informed Bombay High Court bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka that the scanners have been shifted from Hyderabad and Goa airports to Nagpur and Pune airports. The government confirmed that these thermal scanners would be functional within a week, after which the Court wants the Centre to file a compliance report on October 1, 2014.
