Bangalore: In 2013, Aviators India Pvt Ltd, established in 1994, grabbed headlines when, in the presence of French President Francois Hollande, it signed an order for seven EC135 helicopters with chopper major Eurocopter to be used for emergency medical services. It was started by Capt Arun Sharma, who came back to India in 1994 after earning his license in the USA and working in a flying school to build his flight hours so he could fly a commercial airliner.
Upon his return, he saw great potential in the industry. "Back in the US, we would get constant updates on the aviation industry in India. It was clear that the industry was growing with Reliance, Tata and even the Air India looking for pilots," he says. At the time, he was the sole representative of Jeppesens (a company that provides training materials, aeronautical charts, flight planning, navigation data and aviation weather) and Aircraft Technical Publishers, who made aircraft manuals. "This helped me connect with commercial airliners."
Soon, Aviators began covering the entire gamut including flight operations, ground handling, fuelling, crew management, aircraft management and sales and gaining landing clearances for clients such as Jet Airways, East West Airlines and so on in the 90s and early 2000s. They also gained a loyal clientele for chartered services for Reliance Group, Adani Group and the Tatas, among others.
